The\u00a0national Republican\u00a0Party?<\/p>\n<p>One could\u00a0argue\u00a0that the behavior we are witnessing on the national stage is an extreme manifestation\u00a0\u2014\u00a0not who the Republican\u00a0Party\u00a0really is. Or one could conclude that how President Trump operates, and how the Republican-controlled Congress and\u00a0state governments\u00a0capitulate and abdicate their constitutional responsibilities\u00a0, reflects\u00a0what the Republican Party has actually become.<\/p>\n<p>The behavior of Republican lawmakers in Jefferson City and in Washington is\u00a0similar\u00a0in many ways\u00a0, differing more\u00a0in degree than in kind.<\/p>\n<p>Consider\u00a0the tendency\u00a0to\u00a0promote\u00a0the welfare of the wealthiest at the expense of the working class and the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans in the U.S. Congress\u00a0passed\u00a0the \u201cBig Beautiful Bill,\u201d with massive tax cuts\u00a0that deliver\u00a0major benefits\u00a0tothe rich while cutting funding, eliminating programs\u00a0,\u00a0or putting constraints on programs \u2014 Medicaid,\u00a0education, Social Security and affordable health care\u00a0\u2014 that benefit the working class, the poor\u00a0and\u00a0seniors.<\/p>\n<p>In Missouri, as\u00a0the state\u2019s\u00a0record surplus\u00a0has\u00a0been depleted, Republican lawmakers are eagerly pushing\u00a0a\u00a0constitutional amendment that would phase out the state income tax. If they succeed,\u00a0who would\u00a0most benefit? The wealthiest\u00a0Missourians.<\/p>\n<p>If they increase the sales tax on goods and services to make up for the tremendous loss in\u00a0revenue\u00a0as a result of\u00a0eliminating the income tax, who will bear the\u00a0heaviest\u00a0burden? The working class and the poor.<\/p>\n<p>At the federal and state\u00a0levels, who is the GOP working for \u2014 who and what\u00a0determine\u00a0their policy priorities?<\/p>\n<p>Another part of the Big Beautiful Bill is\u00a0the elimination of\u00a0the Department of Education and many of the programs that would benefit\u00a0K-12\u00a0and higher education. Most recently, a program that would have provided relief in how student loans are repaid is being eliminated. Who is likely to have student loans to get through college or other advanced training? Children of\u00a0working-class\u00a0and poor families**.**<\/p>\n<p>In Missouri, lawmakers are considering a bill to overhaul higher education\u00a0by\u00a0allocating more funding for community colleges and four-year colleges to\u00a0meet\u00a0the needs of more students. Will it survive and be passed into law?<\/p>\n<p>State lawmakers, once again, have failed to fully fund\u00a0public\u00a0schools in accordance with the state foundation formula,\u00a0and\u00a0basic transportation needs for school districts are not adequately funded.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>At the national level, where do the needs of America\u2019s children fit\u00a0on\u00a0the list of legislative priorities?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in the Big Beautiful Bill for them?<\/p>\n<p>We see the negative impact on poor and low-income children based on the changes in Medicaid benefits and funding, reduced access to affordable healthcare services,\u00a0and\u00a0the cuts and elimination of educational programs and resources at every level of our education system.<\/p>\n<p>The same question can be asked of Missouri lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>So far during this legislative session, lawmakers have failed to restore millions of dollars in cuts to programs that provide childcare\u00a0for\u00a0low-income and foster children. Failure to fund these programs has a ripple effect on how participating childcare providers are able, or unable, to operate.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, our most vulnerable, deprived and at-risk children are denied access to needed care and developmental programs that would improve their well-being and readiness as they prepare to enter grade school. Poor working parents are denied the support they need to keep their jobs while trying to improve their overall quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>No party is perfect or can boast of a stellar history. But both the Republican and Democratic parties can point to records of leadership they are proud of \u2014 that counted and\u00a0were\u00a0pivotal during defining moments in the state\u2019s and America\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>What made the difference?<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of both parties put the well-being, the future of the state, the country and\u00a0their\u00a0citizens first.<\/p>\n<p>A broader but just as important question is: In addition to the future of our state, do we care about where our country is headed?<\/p>\n<p>The presidency, U.S. Senate, House of Representatives, and the majority of state governorships and legislatures are controlled currently by the Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p>But who is the Republican Party?<\/p>\n<p>Is it a party of one?<\/p>\n<p>At critical periods in the history of this country, the Republican Party was identified by the noble deeds of its leaders. It was once known as the party of Lincoln, and most recently, the party of Reagan \u2014 all because of the acts and policies that were proposed, pursued and advanced on behalf of the welfare of the country.<\/p>\n<p>What does the Republican Party of today stand for?<\/p>\n<p>What are its guiding principles, values?<\/p>\n<p>These are questions not only every Republican must take time to think about and answer. We all must.<\/p>\n<p>As Missourians and Americans \u2014 Republicans, Democrats, independents or\u00a0the\u00a0non-affiliated \u2014 do you find the current Republican leadership, direction and actions acceptable? Are you happy, satisfied\u00a0or\u00a0proud of where the GOP is leading this country domestically and internationally?<\/p>\n<p>While what is going on in our state hits closest to home, we cannot afford to ignore the country of which we are also\u00a0apart. Our image, reputation, position in the world and overall quality of life are inextricably tied.<\/p>\n<p>Many fellow Missourians and Americans before us confronted defining moments that required them to look within\u00a0andtake a stand\u00a0on\u00a0what they wanted their future state and country to be.<\/p>\n<p>Irrespective of party affiliation or none, now is our time to stand up.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(CGinspiration\/iStock Images) A political party is defined by the governing philosophy, values, policies and actions of its\u00a0leaders\u00a0and members.
