I was\u00a0on a cruise with my wife\u00a0when\u00a0I opened my lab results online and saw a note\u00a0advising me to\u00a0see an oncologist. There is no good reason to be referred\u00a0toan oncologist.<\/p>\n<p>This disease will\u00a0likely shorten\u00a0my life, and it has unquestionably shrunk it. Every new set of lab results is another spin of the chamber. On good days, the numbers stay the\u00a0same,\u00a0and I feel like\u00a0I\u2019vedodged another bullet. On bad days, the weight of it is crushing\u2014for me and for my family, who live with the same fear, just without the charts and test results to distract them.<\/p>\n<p>For 30 years in Scottsdale, Arizona, I\u2019ve taken care of our home \u2014 our pool, odds and ends around the house and our yard. Like many homeowners, I trusted what was on the shelves at places like Costco and Home Depot. Roundup was everywhere, marketed as a convenient solution for killing weeds. I sprayed it for decades without thinking twice.<\/p>\n<p>I have no family history of this kind\u00a0of cancer. When I asked my doctors what could have caused it, they told me that exposure to certain chemicals is a\u00a0likely culprit. When I specifically asked about Roundup, they said there was\u00a0a very, very\u00a0high\u00a0probability that my cancer was caused by that\u00a0exposure, and that they were seeing similar patterns across the country.<\/p>\n<p>I am not a scientist, but I\u00a0do know that\u00a0when you use a product exactly the way\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0told, for years, and are later told that exposure to that product\u00a0likely caused\u00a0your\u00a0cancer,\u00a0someone should be held accountable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>    <\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"editorialSubhed\">Why this\u00a0settlement\u00a0needs to\u00a0happen\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>\t<\/p>\n<p>Monsanto\u2019s proposed\u202f$7.25\u202fbillion\u202fclass settlement would\u00a0establish\u00a0a long-term compensation program for people exposed to Roundup who developed non\u2011Hodgkin lymphoma, including those who may be diagnosed in the years ahead. The agreement was filed in state court in St.\u202fLouis,\u202fMissouri, where most Roundup cases are pending. St.\u202fLouis\u202fCircuit\u202fJudge\u202fTimothy\u202fBoyer, who has presided over several cases alleging that Roundup causes cancer,\u00a0will decide whether to approve the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>This settlement agreement matters because the\u00a0U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case\u00a0that could\u00a0wipe out the legal claims of people like me altogether on the theory that because the EPA\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0require\u00a0a cancer warning on the label, Monsanto\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0either. If Monsanto wins, people who got cancer from their product\u00a0could be left holding an empty bag.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that litigation is unpredictable. Trials take years. Appeals\u00a0can take even\u00a0longer. And while big companies can afford to roll the dice\u00a0repeatedly, sick people cannot. We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have unlimited time, unlimited energy, or unlimited savings.<\/p>\n<p>This proposed settlement\u00a0offers\u00a0a way forward\u00a0without requiring every single person to\u00a0wait for\u00a0years\u00a0until they get their turn to roll the dice at trial. It also protects\u00a0people who get diagnosed years from now, so they\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0left out in the cold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>    <\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"editorialSubhed\">What this means for my family\u00a0\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>\t<\/p>\n<p>Due to my cancer diagnosis my immune system is permanently compromised, and my world has gotten a lot smaller. I gave up season tickets to the symphony because I cannot safely sit in a 4,000\u2011seat hall anymore. I avoid crowds. Cold and flu season is now a real concern for me.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0compensation from\u00a0this settlement\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0cure me or give me back the retirement my wife and I planned. The best\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0ever going to be with this cancer is right now.
