(Photo by Erik Gunn\/Wisconsin Examiner)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia now reject at least some federal vaccine guidance as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to de-emphasize the importance of childhood vaccinations under U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., according to research by KFF, a nonprofit health policy organization based in California and Washington, D.C.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other-health\/state-indicator\/reliance-on-sources-other-than-cdc-acip-for-state-childhood-vaccine-recommendations\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\"><span>tally<\/span><\/a><span> as of March 10 reflects states that have announced they will go their own way on childhood vaccines since last May, when Kennedy began to make changes to the vaccine schedule. Those changes culminated with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stateline.org\/2026\/01\/13\/states-go-their-own-way-as-rfk-jr-shifts-federal-vaccine-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>reduction<\/span><\/a><span> in recommended routine childhood vaccinations, from 13 to 7, as of January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>New state-by-state recommendations reflect a partisan divide, as all states with Democratic governors have rejected federal childhood vaccine guidance while many Republican states have not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Virginia announced in February that it would not follow CDC guidelines, a change after the inauguration of Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who took over after a Republican predecessor. Spanberger had campaigned on the issue, saying she would not support a rollback of childhood vaccinations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Florida, the state Senate passed a bill March 9 making it easier for parents to let their children go unvaccinated, though state House leaders have said they will not consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaphoenix.com\/2026\/03\/04\/medical-freedom-from-vaccines-shackled-for-the-2026-session\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>a similar bill<\/span><\/a><span> despite support for it from Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In Louisiana, the state has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2024\/12\/21\/louisiana-flu-shots\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>adopted a policy<\/span><\/a><span> of not promoting vaccines or holding clinics. Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a physician who reluctantly agreed to Kennedy\u2019s confirmation despite objecting to his views on vaccines, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/bill-cassidy-rfk-jr-confirmation-vaccines-hepatitis-b-hhs-senate-primary-louisiana\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>facing a primary fight<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fifteen Democrat-led states sued Kennedy in federal court in February, seeking a reversal of the new vaccine guidelines. A preliminary hearing is scheduled May 29.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some states have created formal alliances to share health information. The Northeast Public Health Collaborative, composed of Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York state, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York City,\u00a0said in January it will continue following guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics instead of the federal government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The American Academy of Pediatrics released its immunization schedule for 2026, which kept in place the schedule as it was before HHS\u2019s overhaul. Twelve medical professional organizations\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/news\/pediatrics\/20260128\/clinicians-unite-behind-aap-vaccine-schedule\" target=\"_blank\"><span>endorsed<\/span><\/a><span> the academy\u2019s schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And governors of 14 states have formed another alliance to share public health information, including on vaccines. The updated CDC guidance \u201ccreates confusion and introduces unnecessary barriers for families who want to protect their children from serious illness,\u201d said the Governors Public Health Alliance in a January\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govsforhealth.org\/news\/governors-public-health-alliance-denounces-changes-to-childhood-vaccination-recommendations\/#:~:text=creates%20confusion%20and%20introduces%20unnecessary%20barriers%20for%20families%20who%20want%20to%20protect%20their%20children%20from%20serious%20illness\" target=\"_blank\"><span>news release<\/span><\/a><span>.
