Santiago\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The United States lost 92,000 jobs in February, edging unemployment up slightly according to the latest employment figures released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> showed, for the third time in the last five months, losses among nonfarm jobs and highlighted a continued \u201ctrend down\u201d in the information sector and federal government employment. The federal workforce is down by 11% from its peak in October 2024, according to the bureau. The report also noted a decrease in health care jobs, \u201creflecting strike activity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Unemployment ticked up to 4.4% from 4.3% in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/economicdata\/empsit_02112026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">January,<\/a> and rates remained higher for women, teenagers and non-white workers.<\/p>\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Administration officials blamed the job losses on winter weather on the East Coast and labor strife among West Coast health care workers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But Democrats faulted President Donald Trump\u2019s policies, including military action in Iran and reimposing tariffs after the U.S. Supreme Court said many of Trump\u2019s taxes on foreign goods were illegal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday\u2019s report is a \u201cblaring alarm that Donald Trump\u2019s economy is deteriorating rapidly,\u201d and speculated the nearly week-old war in Iran will only make things worse.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cNow we\u2019ve seen job losses in two of the last three months and an economy teetering on the edge of recession,\u201d Schumer said in a Friday morning statement. \u201cTariffs are increasing costs, gas prices are spiking, and jobs are evaporating: The Trump Republican agenda is failing the American people and without immediately changing course the economy may go over the cliff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The unexpected report, combined with uncertainty over the war with Iran, rattled U.S. markets Friday morning, sparking a drop across all indexes, according to a daily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/e.nyse.com\/mac-desk-midday-market-update\" target=\"_blank\">update<\/a> from the New York Stock Exchange\u2019s Eric Criscuolo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Economists had estimated a February jobs gain for the U.S. to land around 59,000, according to Criscuolo. Additionally, the report is in stark contrast to January\u2019s figures, which showed the economy gained 130,000 jobs,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/economicdata\/empsit_02112026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<h4>Trump officials project optimism<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But the administration is brushing off negative headlines, and attributing the weak report to ice and snow storms in February and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12074265\/widespread-kaiser-strike-to-end-after-4-weeks-with-no-deal-yet\" target=\"_blank\">month-long strike<\/a> by Kaiser Permanente health care workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhile record-breaking strikes and bad winter weather dragged down February nonfarm employment, the unemployment rate held steady, and there are several positive signs for our economy that continue to show American workers are recovering from the mess left behind by Biden,\u201d\u00a0Labor Secretary Lorie Chavez DeReemer said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She added that the administration\u2019s massive tax and spending cuts law enacted in July is positive for the economy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/03\/06\/nec-director-kevin-hassett-this-economy-is-moving-the-fastest-weve-ever-seen.html\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> CNBC Friday, \u201cI think what we need to start doing with these jobs numbers, at least on the payroll side, is take the average over a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAnd if you take the average over a few months, we had a surprisingly positive one last month and a surprisingly negative one this one. But on average, it\u2019s about what we expect to be seeing,\u201d he said, adding that the sharp fall in immigration is leading to \u201cbreak-even employment\u201d in the U.S.<\/p>\n<h4>No growth<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Economists cautioned the jobs report builds on a negative economic outlook for the country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhile it\u2019s never sensible to read too much into one month of data, this morning\u2019s report showing a decline in nonfarm payrolls and an increase in the unemployment rate comes at a difficult moment, with inflation still above target and an oil price shock threatening to raise inflation further,\u201d said Daniel Hornung, a fellow at Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe report complicates the Fed\u2019s efforts to keep both unemployment and inflation low, and it makes it difficult for the Administration to argue heading into the midterms that their policies are leading to the kind of growth or improvement in living standards that they\u2019ve long promised,\u201d Hornung, the deputy director of the National Economic Council under President Joe Biden, said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">David Kelly, JPMorgan Asset Management\u2019s chief global strategist, described the report as \u201cweak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe\u2019re not seeing any job growth at all, really, in this economy,\u201d Kelly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2026\/03\/06\/jpmorgans-david-kelly-on-february-jobs-report-not-seeing-any-job-growth-at-all-in-this-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> CNBC Friday morning. \u201cBut because immigration has done such a 180 here, and we\u2019ve got a huge drop in the labor force \u2014 and that\u2019s keeping the unemployment rate from spiking here \u2014 but it\u2019s a very, very slow economy.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stock market numbers are displayed on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during morning trading on March 6, 2026.
