WASHINGTON \u2014 The White House on Friday pulled down a social media post depicting former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as monkeys after members of Congress from both political parties expressed dismay and called it racist.<\/p>\n

A White House spokesperson told States Newsroom around noon that a \u201cstaffer erroneously made the post\u201d that was shared on\u00a0President Donald Trump\u2019s social media platform late Thursday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote in a statement earlier in the day the video wasn\u2019t a real issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is from an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from the Lion King,\u201d she wrote. \u201cPlease stop the fake outrage and report on something today that actually matters to the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House press office also shared via email\u00a0the full video<\/a>, which was published in October. Trump shared\u00a0a clip of the video on his social media account on Thursday at 11:44 p.m. Eastern within another video about allegations of 2020 election fraud in Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The decision to delete Trump\u2019s social media post followed hours of pushback from lawmakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cPraying it was fake because it\u2019s the most racist thing I\u2019ve seen out of this White House,\u201d wrote South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott. \u201cThe President should remove it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott is chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which is tasked with ensuring the GOP maintains its majority in that chamber following November\u2019s midterm elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nebraska Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts posted that, \u201cEven if this was a Lion King meme, a reasonable person sees the racist context to this. The White House should do what anyone does when they make a mistake: remove this and apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York Republican Rep. Mike Lawler wrote the \u201cpost is wrong and incredibly offensive \u2014 whether intentional or a mistake \u2014 and should be deleted immediately with an apology offered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker called the post \u201ctotally unacceptable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president should take it down and apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., described the video as something that \u201cis dangerous and degrades our country\u201d as well as \u201cRacist. Vile. Abhorrent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President must immediately delete the post and apologize to Barack and Michelle Obama, two great Americans who make Donald Trump look like a small, envious man,\u201d Schumer wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Michigan Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin posted, \u201cThis is racist garbage from President Trump. If you\u2019re finding yourself defending it, you\u2019re on the wrong side of history.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., wrote that \u201cPresident Obama and Michelle Obama are brilliant, compassionate and patriotic Americans. They represent the best of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump is a vile, unhinged and malignant bottom feeder,\u201d Jeffries added. \u201cWhy are GOP leaders like John Thune continuing to stand by this sick individual? Every single Republican must immediately denounce Donald Trump\u2019s disgusting bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n

New York Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke, chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, wrote that while some people \u201cstill find Donald Trump\u2019s behavior shocking. I do not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the man who built his political fortune by way of a vile campaign of birther lies and harassment against President Obama,\u201d Clarke wrote. \u201cBigotry has been his brand since Day 1, and the wretched \u2018yes\u2019 men who surround him enabling or endorsing this conduct aren\u2019t going to change that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs his scandals continue to escalate, and as he continues to lose the little lucidity that remains with him, I expect Donald to only retreat deeper into the sewers of racism and ignorance. That\u2019s where he\u2019s most at home. That\u2019s where he\u2019s most comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n
