Through my work with the Greater Missouri Leadership Foundation (Greater MO), I have seen again and again that mentoring is not about advice alone. It is about belief, access, accountability\u2014and <em>support that helps women soar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That support matters more than ever. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/people-and-organizational-performance\/our-insights\/women-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\">Women in the Workplace<\/a> study from McKinsey &amp; Co. and LeanIn.Org, one of the biggest drivers of women\u2019s ability to advance in their careers is the level of career support they receive. But women still receive less of that support, particularly early and later in their careers, which can limit their professional growth. It also robs our economy of the benefits of their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>At Greater MO, our mission is to strengthen Missouri by preparing women for civic, community, and organizational leadership. That work is grounded in a simple but powerful truth: leadership does not develop in isolation. It develops in relationship, and all of us have a role to play.<\/p>\n<p>When women are supported and mentored well, they stay engaged, pursue promotions, run for boards, step into public service, and remain connected to their communities. When they are not, we see the opposite: talent loss, disengagement, and leadership gaps that ripple across sectors. Mentoring is how we build a sustainable pipeline of leaders who are prepared not only to lead organizations, but to steward communities.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the overwhelming evidence of the importance of mentorship to our workplaces and our economy, mentorship remains too scarce. <a href=\"https:\/\/leanin.org\/mentor-her#:~:text=Women%20get%20less%20support,influential%20mentor%20holds%20them%20back.\" target=\"_blank\">Research<\/a> shows that women are 24% less likely than men to get advice from senior leaders, and 62% of women of color say the lack of an influential mentor holds them back. And while the vast majority of Fortune 500 companies offer mentorship programs, uptake is a challenge\u2014with <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2026\/01\/et-instill-a-mentorship-culture-in-your-organization\" target=\"_blank\">less than a quarter<\/a> of employees taking advantage of the programs available to them.<\/p>\n<p>We can do better.<\/p>\n<p>National Mentoring Month is an invitation\u2014to individuals, organizations, and communities\u2014to take mentoring seriously. Not as a program, but as practice. Not as charity, but as strategy.<\/p>\n<p>If you are further along in your career, consider who is watching your path and wondering if theirs is possible. If you are earlier in your journey, seek out those who ask thoughtful questions and honor your full life, not just your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. And if you lead an organization, ask whether mentoring and structured support systems are embedded into your culture\u2014or left to chance.<\/p>\n<p>Mentoring does not require perfection or decades of experience\u2014only presence, curiosity, and a willingness to share both lessons learned and lessons still unfolding. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/pnmgc.unm.edu\/articles\/article-files\/goal-attainment.pdf.%20Learn%20more%20about%20Circles%20at%20leanin.org\/circles\" target=\"_blank\">research <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pnmgc.unm.edu\/articles\/article-files\/goal-attainment.pdf.%20Learn%20more%20about%20Circles%20at%20leanin.org\/circles\" target=\"_blank\">shows<\/a> peer mentorship leads to longer-lasting relationships and is just as effective as traditional mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most meaningful mentoring relationships in my own life came at a moment when I did not yet have the language for what I needed. My mentor did not hand me a blueprint. Instead, she asked better questions: <em>What do you want your life to look like? What are you optimizing for right now? What does \u201cenough\u201d look like in this season?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those questions stayed with me. They shaped how I lead, how I mentor, and how I encourage others to define success on their own terms\u2014not as perfection, but as progress with intention.<\/p>\n<p>The future of leadership in Missouri will not be built by accident. It will be built through relationships, intention, unwavering support, and the quiet, powerful work of mentoring\u2014one conversation, one goal, one rising leader at a time.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Missouri Capitol Building in Jefferson City (Getty Images).
