If you or a loved one are in crisis, help is available 24 hours a day by dialing 988 or visiting <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/988hotline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"http:\/\/988hotline.org\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\"><em>988hotline.org<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A bill is heading to President Donald Trump\u2019s desk compelling the release of unclassified investigative files from the case against convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a friend to the rich and powerful who died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 awaiting federal trial on sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Senate Republicans on Tuesday night did not object to a unanimous consent request from Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to accept and pass the legislation, as is, after the U.S. House overwhelmingly approved the measure earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Senate did not receive the bill from the House before adjourning Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A senior administration official told States Newsroom the president will sign the bill \u201cwhenever it gets to the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The lawmakers in the lower chamber voted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/2025289\" target=\"_blank\">427-1<\/a> to compel the Department of Justice to release materials related to the government\u2019s investigation of the financier who harmed over 1,000 victims, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., was the lone \u201cno\u201d vote.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Survivors and their supporters watched the vote from the chamber\u2019s gallery seats. Among them was Sky Roberts, the brother of the late Virginia Giuffre, who sued Epstein\u2019s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell and the British royal family\u2019s Andrew Windsor, who recently was stripped of his title of prince. Giuffre died by suicide in April.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m very happy with the outcome, but this is just the beginning, and we have a lot of work ahead of us, a lot more to do,\u201d Haley Robson told States Newsroom in an interview after the vote. Robson is prominent among those who have shared their stories of abuse by Epstein.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-resolution\/581\" target=\"_blank\">bill<\/a> now goes to Trump, who said Monday he will sign it.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2018Courage and advocacy\u2019 of survivors cited<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Schumer, a New York Democrat, wrote on social media earlier the vote would \u201cnot have been possible without the courage and advocacy of Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s survivors. They made this vote possible. They risked their safety coming out of the darkness to share their stories and to tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said earlier Tuesday he expected the bill to move through the Senate \u201cfairly quickly\u201d and likely without changes, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/18\/politics\/what-happens-next-epstein-bill\" target=\"_blank\">reporting<\/a> by CNN.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The legislation compels the Justice Department to publicly disclose \u201call unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in its possession that relate to Epstein or Maxwell.\u201d They include records related to Epstein\u2019s detention and death; flight logs from Epstein\u2019s planes; names of those connected with Epstein\u2019s alleged crimes; records of civil settlements, and sealed and unsealed immunity deals and plea bargains; records pertaining to entities with ties to Epstein\u2019s trafficking or financial networks; and internal DOJ communications \u201cconcerning decisions to investigate or charge Epstein or his associates.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The bill carves out exceptions for records containing victims\u2019 identities, images of death or physical abuse, and information that could jeopardize a federal investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The bill also notes that the \u201cDOJ may not withhold or redact records on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Trump, Johnson opposition<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson opposed the House effort to release the files until this week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Johnson said Tuesday morning that he will vote for the measure that has been forced to the floor after Reps. (Photo by Jennifer Shutt\/States Newsroom)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Louisiana Republican told reporters at his regular House leadership press conference that the \u201cforcing mechanism here prevents the very deliberate, professional, careful manner in which Congress is supposed to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cBut having now forced the vote, none of us want to go on record and in any way be accused of not being for maximum transparency,\u201d Johnson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/program\/news-conference\/house-republican-leaders-hold-news-conference\/669234\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The vote comes less than a week after lawmakers on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/us-house-dems-say-newly-released-epstein-emails-show-trump-knew-about-abuse\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> some 20,000 pages of emails from Epstein\u2019s estate that repeatedly mentioned Trump\u2019s name.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In one email from Epstein to Maxwell, the financier and sex offender claimed Trump \u201cknew about the girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump denies any involvement with Epstein\u2019s alleged crimes, and has said that he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/29\/politics\/epstein-trump-falling-out-analysis\" target=\"_blank\">kicked Epstein out<\/a> of his private Florida club, Mar-a-Lago, because he alleged the financier had poached young female staffers from the club. Epstein was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/01\/us\/jeffrey-epstein-grand-jury\" target=\"_blank\">convicted<\/a> in Florida of soliciting minors for sex in 2008.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During a press conference in the Oval Office Tuesday alongside the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump told reporters, \u201cAs far as the Epstein files, I have nothing to do with Jeffery Epstein. I threw him out of my club many years ago because I thought he was a sick pervert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump added, as he has repeatedly said before, that the files are a \u201cDemocratic hoax.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Plaskett text messages<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The thousands of documents released by Epstein\u2019s estate revealed the sex offender\u2019s correspondence with academics, journalists, lawmakers and at least one spiritual leader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Among the revelations were text messages between Epstein and U.S. Democratic Delegate Stacey Plaskett, who represents the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein owned a residence.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">An effort by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., is underway to formally reprimand Plaskett for texting with Epstein during a 2019 congressional hearing that featured testimony from Trump\u2019s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen. News of the text exchange was originally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/14\/epstein-text-messages-cohen-house-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> by the Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The official censure would remove Plaskett from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A vote was expected Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Plaskett defended herself on the House floor Tuesday afternoon, saying, \u201cWe all know that Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s actions were absolutely reprehensible as a constituent, as an individual who gave donations to me. When I learned of the extent of his actions after his investigation, I gave that money to women\u2019s organizations in my community.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Stories of abuse\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Women who told stories of being abused by Epstein as teens rallied outside the U.S. Capitol Tuesday morning, alongside Massie, Khanna and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., whom Trump attacked online this weekend, nicknaming her a \u201ctraitor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Robson told the crowd that as a Republican herself, the advocacy from Massie and Greene is \u201cunbelievable to watch, and we are so grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAnd to the president of the United States of America, who is not here today, I want to send a clear message to you: While I do understand that your position has changed on the Epstein files, and I\u2019m grateful that you have pledged to sign this bill, I can\u2019t help to be skeptical of what the agenda is,\u201d Robson said.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-drupal-media  view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"drupal-media-wrapper media--view-mode-large\">\n<div class=\"blazy blazy--field blazy--view blazy--field-media-image blazy--field-media-image--large blazy--view--article-feeds-v2-feed-categorized-articles-v2 blazy--view--article-feeds-v2 blazy--view--article-feeds-v2--categorized-articles-v2 field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\" data-blazy>\n<div data-b-token=\"b-2010b314fc8\" class=\"media media--blazy media--image media--responsive is-b-loading\">  <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__element b-lazy b-responsive img-fluid\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/marjorietaylorgreenenov182025.png\" width=\"800\" height=\"442\" alt=\"U.S. Rep. (Screenshot courtesy of C-SPAN)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a Sunday night post on his own social media platform, Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/trump-about-face-urges-us-house-republicans-vote-release-epstein-files\" target=\"_blank\">told Republicans<\/a> to vote in favor of the bipartisan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-resolution\/581\" target=\"_blank\">legislation<\/a> Tuesday, which lawmakers have named the Epstein Files Transparency Act.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Greene, who also spoke at the press conference, said the administration\u2019s refusal to release what are collectively referred to as the Epstein files \u201chas ripped MAGA apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe only thing that will speak to the powerful, courageous women behind me is when action is actually taken to release these files, and the American people won\u2019t tolerate any other b- \u2013 \u2013 -t,\u201d Greene said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">GOP Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Lauren Boebert of Colorado were the other Republicans to join Massie, Greene and all Democrats to sign the petition.<\/p>\n<h4>Grijalva signature<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a second press conference outside the Capitol later Tuesday morning, the House\u2019s newest Democratic member, Arizona\u2019s Adelita Grijalva, spoke alongside sexual abuse prevention advocates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe momentum behind this did not come from politicians. It came from survivors and the public who demanded answers. (Photo by Ashley Murray\/States Newsroom)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Roughly a dozen public protesters stood outside the police barricade surrounding the press conference, holding signs demanding the release of the Epstein files.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Robin Galbraith, 61, of Maryland, held a sign protesting Johnson\u2019s refusal to allow an earlier floor vote to disclose the files.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThese survivors deserve justice. And you know, all women and girls deserve justice,\u201d Galbraith told States Newsroom in an interview. \u201cLike when you have the richest people in the world trafficking girls, I mean, as somebody who has daughters and sons, we all want to see that children are not victims like this anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>FBI memo\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In July, the FBI issued a memo stating the department would not publicly release any further information on the Epstein case.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The sudden reversal, after Trump and his supporters campaigned on releasing the files, sparked upheaval among the president\u2019s base and trained a magnifying glass on Trump\u2019s well-documented friendship with Epstein.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump denies any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The president sued The Wall Street Journal for reporting on a 50th\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/trump-jeffrey-epstein-birthday-letter-we-have-certain-things-in-common-f918d796?mod=Searchresults_pos1&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\">birthday card<\/a> Trump allegedly gave to Epstein. The card featured a cryptic message and a doodle of a naked woman with Trump\u2019s apparent signature mimicking pubic hair. Trump denies that he created and signed the birthday doodle.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Journal also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/justice-department-told-trump-name-in-epstein-files-727a8038?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that Attorney General Pam Bondi briefed the president in May that his name appeared in the Epstein case files. The context in which his name appeared is unclear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/article221404845.html\" target=\"_blank\">series<\/a> in the Miami Herald in 2018 by journalist Julie K.
