(Photo by Tim Brown\/Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia (Tim Brown\/Getty Images).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Federal Aviation Administration early Monday lifted an order that airlines cut domestic flights to 40 major U.S. airports, as air traffic control staffing levels improve following the six-week government shutdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/Cancellation-of-Emergency-Order.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">move<\/a> came just before the busiest travel week of the year, though it was unclear how long it would take for airlines to resume normal operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The FAA\u2019s safety team recommended ending the restrictions after seeing only one staffing trigger affect travel Sunday, according to an agency press release. There were 81 staffing triggers on Nov. 8, a few days before the end of the longest shutdown in U.S. history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI want to thank the FAA\u2019s dedicated safety team for keeping our skies secure during the longest government shutdown in our nation\u2019s history and the country\u2019s patience for putting safety first,\u201d Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in the release. \u201cThanks to President Trump\u2019s leadership, controllers have returned to their posts and normal operations can resume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/government-reopens-after-43-days-trump-signs-bill-ending-record-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\">reopened<\/a> after a 43-day shutdown on Nov. 12.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Air traffic controllers were required to work without pay during the shutdown, leaving many to pursue second jobs and the workforce overstressed. The order to reduce flights, peaking at 6% at major airports, was meant to reduce that stress.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The banners at the tops of major U.S. airline websites warning of canceled flights disappeared by Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One carrier, Southwest, replaced it with a message that its normal schedule would resume Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cGood news, the US government shutdown has ended,\u201d the message read. \u201cOur full schedule resumes on Nov 17.
