Thousands gathered in cities and towns all over Missouri Saturday at No Kings demonstrations to speak up against the many ways they believe the current administration \u2014\u00a0both at the federal and state level \u2014 is a threat to democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

And scattered among the crowds were volunteers with clipboards, collecting signatures for initiative petition campaigns hoping to make the 2026 ballot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are just out here trying to make sure that the people hold the power and not politicians,\u201d said Drew Amidei, a staff organizer for Missouri Jobs with Justice Voter Action, at the Jefferson City rally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was the second nationwide No Kings mass gathering, with the first organized in June to coincide with a military parade in Washington, D.C., that commemorated the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army and President Donald Trump\u2019s 79th birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, Missourians have found more reasons to organize at the state level, said Sue Rodgers, spokesperson for We Stand United Missouri. The organization led the Jefferson City rally at the State Capitol, where hundreds of protesters turned out despite a rainy afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rogers pointed to last month\u2019s move by Missouri lawmakers to <\/span>push forward a gerrymandered congressional map<\/span><\/a> requested by Trump and a ballot measure to make it harder for citizens to amend the state\u2019s constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more specific issues at this point,\u201d Rodgers told The Independent. \u201cWe see more evidence of the authoritarian power grabs and executive overreach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Even a thunderstorm in St. Louis wasn\u2019t enough to dampen the spirits of protesters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s raining. I know it\u2019s a little cool,\u201d former Democratic U.S. Rep. Cori Bush told a crowd of more than a thousand people gathered in downtown St. Louis amid the thunderstorm. \u201cBut you all, this is nothing in comparison to the reign that we\u2019ll have to live through if we don\u2019t resist the Donald Trump administration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jefferson City<\/h4>\n

\t<\/p>\n

Rodgers pointed to organizations with tents surrounding the Missouri State Capitol lawn with volunteers collecting signatures for three petition campaigns.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe definitely have more of a focus this time on the initiative petitions and redistricting,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

A petition seeking a <\/span>statewide vote on the gerrymandered Missouri redistricting plan<\/span><\/a> circulated during the demonstration, with groups like Missouri Jobs with Justice Voter Action and Respect Missouri Voters collecting signatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

To them, the citizen-led petitions embody the spirit of No Kings \u2014 with voters asserting power and calling out leadership they believe is acting autocratic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo Kings is a good time to get this message out because both this referendum and this rally are really about empowering the people of Missouri,\u201d Amidei said. \u201cIt\u2019s really about asserting our democratic values.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He told The Independent there was a \u201cgood amount of foot traffic\u201d as he collected signatures for a petition seeking a statewide vote on the gerrymandered Missouri redistricting plan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organizers wanted voters\u2019 rights to be emphasized while creating an uplifting environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe encouraged them to come in costumes, have fun,\u201d Rodgers said. \u201cEveryone needs a little space to let off anxious energy and find out they are not alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rodgers was one of a handful of women dressed as suffragettes who spoke during the Jefferson City rally about women\u2019s contributions to democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another speaker, assistant attorney general Greg Barnes, dressed as James Madison to warn demonstrators of threats to the U.S. Constitution. He spoke about Trump\u2019s <\/span>mentions of a third term<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But not every costume had an obvious nod to democracy. Others dressed as dinosaurs in inflatable costumes, and one organizer wore a Cheeto costume.<\/span><\/p>\n

Respect Missouri Voters organizer Lindsay Browning, dressed in a cow onesie, told the crowd that the costumes are intentional.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we\u2019re silly, we expose them as frauds,\u201d she said. \u201cFascists can\u2019t promote lies about dangerous, left-wing terrorists when we keep showing up unarmed wearing costumes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike in June, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe did not declare a state of emergency ahead of Saturday\u2019s rallies. At the time, Kehoe said his decision to <\/span>activate the Missouri National Guard <\/span><\/a>was a \u201cprecautionary measure\u201d in the case of \u201cevents that are occurring or could occur.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe respect, and will defend, the right to peacefully protest,\u201d <\/span>Kehoe said in a statement <\/span><\/a>at the time, \u201cbut we will not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kehoe is currently being <\/span>sued by <\/span>Lucas Cierpiot, <\/span><\/a>a disability-rights activist from Blue Springs, and the son of a Republican state senator, over his decision to activate troops over the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local news outlets reported that the June protests remained uneventful between demonstrators and police.<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Louis\u00a0<\/h4>\n

\t<\/p>\n

The crowd at Keiner Plaza in downtown St. Louis brought with it ample American flags, ponchos and an occasional inflatable costume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFight looks like marching in the streets. Fight looks like collecting signatures,\u201d state Rep. Ray Reed, a Democrat from St. Louis, told the crowd. \u201c \u2026 Fight looks like putting your name on a ballot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brice Bloom-Ellis, 69, of St. Louis, stood several yards away holding a sign demanding the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. But ICE was front of mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m totally opposed to masked federal police snatching people off the street,\u201d said Bloom-Ellis, who works in child welfare. \u201cIt\u2019s just unbelievable that that\u2019s happening in this country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was also appalled by Missouri\u2019s new congressional map, which he called nothing but a \u201cpower grab.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bloom-Ellis was far from the only one upset that the governor took the president\u2019s request to redraw the congressional map in favor of Republicans to heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tullia Hamilton, 77, of St. Louis, said she\u2019s never met Kehoe, but if she did, she knows what she would tell him:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know you, but chances are you\u2019re three times the man Donald Trump is,\u201d said Hamilton, a retired history professor. \u201cWhy are you bowing to him? He\u2019s a small person.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beside Hamilton stood by her good friend, Dr. Seth Eisen, 84, the director of Washington University\u2019s Clinical Rheumatology Research Program, who brought a sign that read: \u201chands off science.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really a throw-back for science and also for health care in St. Louis specifically, but in the state and in the nation as well,\u201d said Hamilton, who in recent months has seen NIH funding decreased, studies halted, and colleagues leave academia for the pharmaceutical industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening now is going to impact research for 10 years,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if it were to change today.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryan Maliff, 35, of Webster Groves, who works in health care, is already seeing the impact on Missourians, including his patients who can no longer afford insulin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of what\u2019s been done to gut the protections for Medicare and Medicaid, it\u2019s affecting my work, it\u2019s affecting my patients,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the group rounded out its march through downtown, which lasted nearly two hours, Ari Jones-Bradley, 49, said she\u2019s spent the past several months feeling hopeless, alone and terrified for the world her four sons are growing up in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re headed into extremely dark times, and this is not the country my grandfather fought for,\u201d Jones-Bradley said of her grandfather who served in World War II at the Battle of Iwo Jima.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But she said Saturday\u2019s demonstration, which she called \u201celectrifying,\u201d shifted something in her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m mad,\u201d Jones-Bradley said. \u201cI\u2019m fully energized again and I\u2019m ready to fight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
