The union representing 3,200 Boeing Defense workers on strike in the St. Louis area said it <\/span>has filed an unfair labor practice <\/span><\/a>complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The complaint follows an <\/span>Oct. 8 letter <\/span><\/a>sent to workers by Boeing Executive Vice President Steve Parker, where he urged employees to take the company\u2019s final offer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter how long the strike lasts, the economics won\u2019t change,\u201d Parker wrote in his letter. \u201cThe bottom line is firm. Each of the offers we\u2019ve put forward would give you a better deal than anything comparable we\u2019ve seen in our region and industry\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837 said in a press release Thursday that Parker\u2019s <\/span>statements \u201cmake clear the company\u2019s refusal to bargain in good faith.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The union said the company\u2019s repeated rejections of the union proposals \u201cwithout making any counter offers addressing member concerns\u201d is a violation of federal labor law to negotiate in good faith.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis strike is about respect and fairness,\u201d said Tom Boelling, IAM District 837 directing business representative, in a Thursday press release. \u201cOur members are standing up for their families, their future, and for fair treatment at the bargaining table. Boeing\u2019s delays are hurting its own production, putting critical defense contracts at risk, and showing that you can\u2019t replace skilled union labor with untrained temps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>strike began Aug. 4<\/span><\/a>, just months after Boeing <\/span>was awarded a government contract<\/span><\/a> to build the Air Force\u2019s next-generation fighter jet, the F-47.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company landed the contract because of \u201cthe ingenuity and skill of IAM Union members who have dedicated their careers to building America\u2019s fighter aircraft,\u201d the press release states.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese men and women have decades of skill, experience, and dedication,\u201d said Sam Cicinelli, IAM Union Midwest territory general vice president. \u201cBoeing\u2019s CEO is paid tens of millions of dollars, while the workers who build our military jets are being told to settle for less than they deserve. That\u2019s unacceptable \u2014 and people on both sides of the aisle in Congress are taking notice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cicinelli said lawmakers from <\/span>both parties<\/span><\/a> have called on Boeing to negotiate in good faith, because this strike and the company\u2019s refusal to bargain is hurting our national defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boeing and union representatives met with a federal mediator last month, in an effort to find a path to end the strike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But both issued statements that the negotiations failed. The union said Boeing refused to budge, and the company said union reps came to the table with \u201cunrealistic\u201d expectations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs we have said multiple times, we are open to constructive feedback from the union within the overall economics of our offer, which is at the top of the market for Midwest manufacturing,\u201d according to a statement Boeing issued Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The union countered by saying the way to end the strike would be \u201cthe sensible <\/span>pre-ratified offer <\/span><\/a>that was approved by our membership. We are available when the company has an improved offer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to the unfair labor practice charge, Boeing posted a statement on its website Thursday: \u201cWe\u2019re surprised by the union\u2019s latest publicity stunt, especially since the parties have been engaged for several weeks with the help of a federal mediator. There is nothing unfair about growing wages by 45% on average to $109,000 a year through our landmark contract offer for Midwest manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The union fired back that Boeing\u2019s statement about being engaged with a federal mediator was \u201c<\/span>misleading\u201d because the last meeting with the mediator was on Sept. 29, according to a union statement issued Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

After that meeting, the union leaders say they submitted a settlement offer through the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Boeing rejected that proposal and instead re-issued the same five-year contract offer that had already been rejected by our membership,\u201d the union stated. \u201c<\/span>We continue to stand ready to meet at any time to reach a resolution and end this strike.\u201d<\/p>\n
