(Photo by Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A nonprofit government watchdog sued the Trump administration Friday for failing to respond to public records requests for communications between the White House, Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation about Florida sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including any review of President Donald Trump\u2019s past relationship with the financier.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The lawsuit came as the White House continues to face fallout following the Department of Justice\u2019s refusal in early July to release what are commonly referred to as the Epstein files.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/07\/politics\/epstein-meeting-vance-bondi-patel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting<\/a> by CNN, Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel and Vice President JD Vance met Wednesday evening at the White House to discuss next steps in addressing the growing scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Democracy Forward Foundation filed the lawsuit in district court for the District of Columbia\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/democracyforward.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/DFF-v-FBI-FILED-Compl_25-cv-2597.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleging<\/a> the administration violated the Freedom of Information Act for not responding to the organization\u2019s expedited request within the legally required 10 days.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The nonprofit is requesting the court order the DOJ and the FBI to provide a determination and turn over any non-exempt files, including email communication, calendar invites, and Slack and Microsoft Teams messages among officials who reviewed Epstein investigative files this year. The organization also requested records containing information about Trump\u2019s communication with Epstein dating back to 1990.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPresident Trump has repeatedly said he would release the Epstein files, his spokesperson claims his administration is \u2018the most transparent in history,\u2019 and yet, they continue to hide from the American people. The only thing transparent about the Trump-Vance administration is how clearly they continue to disregard our nation\u2019s laws,\u201d Skye Perryman, Democracy Forward\u2019s president and CEO, said in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPublic records laws outline a clear and simple process that requires the government to immediately produce important documents in response to urgent public information requests, and yet again, this administration is ignoring the law. The court should intervene urgently to ensure the public has access to the information they need about this extraordinary situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The White House and Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<h4>DOJ says no Epstein \u2018client list\u2019 exists<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Trump administration\u2019s handling of Epstein case material has come under a microscope since an unsigned Department of Justice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1407001\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a> on July 7 declared \u201ca systemic review revealed no incriminating \u2018client list,\u2019\u201d and department and FBI officials concluded that \u201cno further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The DOJ\u2019s refusal to release further information sparked criticism among Trump\u2019s voter base, and even among some administration officials. The memo also roused both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Congress, who are now demanding records be released and ex-government officials testify under oath about the investigation into Epstein, who died in a New York City jail cell while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, avoided tough votes compelling the release of Epstein records by sending lawmakers home\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/us-house-gop-scatter-early-august-break-amid-pressure-epstein-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early<\/a> for August break.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The House Committee on Oversight, chaired by Kentucky Republican James Comer,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/us-house-panel-subpoenas-dojs-epstein-files-bill-and-hillary-clinton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued several subpoenas<\/a> Tuesday to past U.S. attorneys general and former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Epstein surrounded himself with powerful figures through the years, including Trump and the Clintons. A July 23 Wall Street Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/justice-department-told-trump-name-in-epstein-files-727a8038?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report\u00a0<\/a>revealed that Bondi briefed the president in May that his name appeared in the Epstein files. The context in which Trump\u2019s name appears in the investigative material is not clear.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In response to failing to fulfill his campaign promise to release the Epstein files, Trump ordered the release of grand jury testimony from the Epstein investigation. A Florida judge swiftly denied that request.<\/p>\n<h4>Ghislaine Maxwell interview<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The president also dispatched Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to a Florida prison to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/tumult-over-epstein-files-dogs-trump-both-dc-and-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/ghislaine-maxwell-sentenced-20-years-prison-conspiring-jeffrey-epstein-sexually-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conspiring<\/a> with Epstein to sexually abuse girls. Details of the interview have not been made public. Maxwell has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridaphoenix.com\/2025\/08\/01\/epstein-accomplice-ghislaine-maxwell-moved-from-tallahassee-federal-prison-to-one-in-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since been moved<\/a> to a minimum-security facility in Bryan, Texas.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The House Oversight Committee also subpoenaed Maxwell for an Aug. 11 interview and rejected her recent request for immunity, according to media reports. The committee has delayed the deposition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Epstein pleaded guilty to sex trafficking in Florida in 2008. A federal grand jury\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/press-release\/file\/1180481\/dl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted<\/a> Epstein in 2019 on charges of sexually trafficking minors.
