(Photo by Shawn Thew-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The House Committee on Oversight issued subpoenas Tuesday for testimony from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among other ex-government officials from both Democratic and Republican administrations, regarding knowledge of Florida sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Committee Chair James Comer of Kentucky also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26040557-20250805-subpoena-and-schedule-to-doj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subpoenaed<\/a> the U.S. Department of Justice for records of Epstein\u2019s federal sex trafficking investigation. Comer gave the department until Aug. 19 to turn over the files.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Comer issued the subpoenas following bipartisan committee support in late July to compel the release of records after President Donald Trump backtracked on his promise to open the files.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Epstein, who pleaded guilty to sex crimes in Florida in 2008, died in a New York City jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting federal trial on sex trafficking charges. Epstein\u2019s co-conspirator, Ghislaine Maxwell, daughter of a wealthy media mogul, is serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison for her role in the sex trafficking scheme.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The former financier had surrounded himself with wealthy and powerful figures, including Trump and the Clintons, among many other influential people.<\/p>\n<h4>Subpoena list<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26040555-20250805-subpoena-cover-letters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letters<\/a> to several former government officials, Comer wrote that congressional oversight of the government\u2019s investigation of Epstein is \u201cimperative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe Committee may use the results of this investigation to inform legislative solutions to improve federal efforts to combat sex trafficking and reform the use of non-prosecution agreements and\/or plea agreements in sex-crime investigations. Given your past relationships with Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell, the Committee believes that you have information regarding their activities that is relevant to the Committee\u2019s investigation,\u201d according to the letters.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In addition to the Clintons, Comer also subpoenaed testimony from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former FBI Director James Comey<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">Former FBI Director Robert Mueller<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Comer outlined a span of deadlines for the depositions into early October.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Comer previously subpoenaed Maxwell for an Aug. 11 deposition. The Kentucky lawmaker denied Maxwell\u2019s request for immunity but agreed to delay her testimony to the committee, according to multiple media\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/08\/01\/congress\/maxwell-hearing-postponed-00489019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Bondi won\u2019t release Epstein files<\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Attention on the federal case against Epstein swelled after the Justice Department, under current Attorney General Pam Bondi, declined to publicly release case files, as Trump had promised on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to an unsigned July 7 Justice Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1407001\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memo<\/a>, \u201ca systemic review revealed no incriminating \u2018client list,\u2019\u201d and department and FBI officials concluded that \u201cno further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The declaration sparked an uproar among lawmakers and Trump\u2019s voter base, including some in his own administration. The president\u2019s supporters, and Trump himself, have long been fixated on what they describe as the \u201cEpstein files,\u201d with some perpetuating conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana sent lawmakers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/us-house-gop-scatter-early-august-break-amid-pressure-epstein-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home early<\/a> for August break to avoid votes compelling the release of material.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Details of the president\u2019s past relationship with Epstein also surfaced, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/trump-jeffrey-epstein-birthday-letter-we-have-certain-things-in-common-f918d796?mod=Searchresults_pos1&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the Wall Street Journal that Trump gave the financier a 50th birthday note featuring a cryptic message and the outline of a naked woman with Trump\u2019s signature mimicking pubic hair. The president denied making the note and swiftly sued the Journal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The outlet also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/justice-department-told-trump-name-in-epstein-files-727a8038?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Bondi briefed Trump in May that his name appeared in the Epstein materials. The context in which Trump appeared in the files is unknown.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump has since called for the release of grand jury testimony in the case, which a Florida judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/23\/nx-s1-5477567\/jeffrey-epstein-transcripts-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Trump also dispatched Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, his former criminal defense lawyer, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/tumult-over-epstein-files-dogs-trump-both-dc-and-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> Maxwell in Florida where she was being held.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The administration has since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/czd049y2qymo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moved<\/a> Maxwell to a Texas facility.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrive at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20, 2025 in Washington, D.C. , for the inauguration of Donald Trump as president.
